Community Mourns Death of Junior Seau

The death of former NFL linebacker and San Diego legend Junior Seau has sent shockwaves throughout the community. Seau apparently took his own life on May 2 and died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Seau played for the San Diego Chargers the majority of his career, from 1990 through 2002, before leaving for the Miami Dolphins. Seau played his college career nearby at the University of Southern California. Along with being an exceptional talent on the field, Seau was known for his charity work and involvement in the community. Seau’s death comes at a time of great debate about how the NFL and football in general protects its players from brain injury. The continuous shots to the head and wear on the brain could lead to depression, dementia and an array of medical conditions. Scientists are learning more and more about the effects of playing football, and the results are...

National Dog Bite Prevention Week

National Dog Bite Prevention Week starts off on May 20, so now is a great time to brush up on prevention tips and what to do if you are attacked by a dog. Over 4.7 million Americans are bitten by a dog annually. Over 800,000 are required to seek medical attention, and the most likely victims are children, followed by senior citizens. Keep the following in mind the next time you are out in your neighborhood or at a park, especially if you are with children: Be cautious around strange dogs and always trust your instincts. Never let babies or small children play with dogs. Always ask a dog owner’s permission before approaching a dog. A little precaution and common sense can go a long way in terms of preventing an attack, but sometimes they are unavoidable. If you or someone is bitten, immediately attempt to locate the owner. Demand...

One Killed, One Injured in Motorcycle Collision

A motorcyclist died on May 29 on Angels Crest Highway, according to the Pasadena Star-News. Two riders were involved in the motorcycle accident, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP). The CHP identified the deceased as 30-year-old Junior Esturado Quic-Ortiz of Hawthorne. He was pronounced dead at the scene where the two motorcycles collided. 45-year-old Patrick Ramirez of San Dimas was the other rider injured. Quic-Ortiz appeared to have lost control of his motorcycle and collided with Ramirez, according to CHP Officer Jose Garcia. Ramirez was treated at a local hospital and is expected to make a full recovery. Officer Garcia said he was not sure what caused Quic-Ortiz to lose control and the accident remains under investigation. May is National Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month. The CHP is working in conjunction with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to raise awareness of the dangers associated with riding. Motorcycle helmets...

May Is National Motorcycle Awareness Month

May is national Motorcycle Safety Month, sponsored by the National Safety Council (NSC). Throughout the month, the NSC will be holding events to raise awareness and hopefully reduce motorcycle accidents. The NSC will remind motorists how much more vulnerable motorcyclists are than drivers of bigger vehicles. Many motorcycle accidents occur when the motorcycle is traveling in another vehicle’s blind spot. Fatal motorcycle accidents involving cars and trucks increased 131 percent from 1998 to 2008. “Throughout spring and summer, the number of motorcyclists on the road will increase,” says David Teater, NSC Senior Director of Transportation Initiatives. “It is important for both motorists and motorcyclists to be aware of one another. To better defend themselves, motorcyclists should follow the rules of the roadway and wear protective gear, including a Department of Transportation compliant helmet.” The NSC offers the following tips for motorists… Allow enough distance when riding behind a motorcycle. Be...

Playground Equipment Manufacturer Recalls Dangerous Slide

A Chicago couple filed a products liability lawsuit against Landscape Structures after their daughter broke her arm on a defective playground slide. The slide, a 7-foot-tall structure called a Evos Slalom Glider did not have a platform at the top or handles. This is dangerous and exposes children to risk of falls. According to Landscape Structures, children are actually supposed to straddle this slide as they go down, instead of the conventional sitting slides. After learning that other children were injured on the slide the family decided to file suit against Landscape Structures. The US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) reported 16 other injuries on this particular slide, which is in approximately 900 playgrounds. Landscape Structures recalled the slide on February 16, 2012. Customers, mostly playgrounds and schools, will have the option of having their money refunded or receiving replacement equipment. April 23-27 was National Playground Safety Week. According to...

A car crashed into a construction work zone on a freeway in Colton on April 11, according to the Los Angeles Times. This car accident occurred less than a week after a roadside worker was killed in a similar accident on the eastbound 10 Freeway. In this more recent accident, a Honda carrying six people ran through the construction zone and struck a stationary tractor trailer. Some of the passenger, ranging in ages from 15 to 20, were ejected from the car. Paramedics rushed them to nearby hospitals. One passenger, 17-years-old, remains in critical condition with a broken neck. According to the California Highway Patrol, the driver was intoxicated.
California Proposes Regulations on Used Car Sales

New proposed legislation that supposedly protects motorists in California is the subject of controversy, according to sources. The proposed bill sets regulations on safety standards for used car sales, and has been named the Used Car Safety Act. The idea behind the proposed bill is that consumers will get more information about the history of the used vehicle before they purchase it. Senator Juan Vargas, D-San Diego, claims the current government protections are not enough. “It doesn’t tell you about airbag deployment,” says Senator Vargas. “It [the car] might have been in an accident, but you don’t know. There may have been other things…recalls on that car, you don’t know that. So, you buy it thinking, ‘OK, great—no warning sign. This could be a good one.’ No, it could be a real lemon.” The bill requires the seller of a used car to mark the vehicle with a red tag...

California Man Killed in Las Vegas Crosswalk

A pedestrian accident claimed the life of a California man on April 14, according to the Las Vegas Sun. Police did not release the name of the victim but identified him as a 62-year-old man. The Metro Police cited the cause of the accident as “pedestrian error.” According to accident reports, the victim and his wife attempted to cross Casino Drive in a marked crosswalk when a Ford F250 struck him. Responders pronounced the man dead on the scene. The driver, a man from Colorado, was not injured. We often try to bring attention to the dangers of pedestrian accidents on this blog, and tragedies like this one are exactly why. Police did not elaborate as to the exact cause of the accident, but it is safe to assume that pedestrian error means the victim did not have the right-of –way. Pedestrian accidents are most likely to happen to males...

California Highway Patrol Cracks Down on “Zombie Drivers”

April is National Distracted Driving Awareness Month, and the California Highway Patrol (CHP) will be cracking down. The CHP refers to the distracted drivers as “zombie drivers,” because they are essentially asleep at the wheel if they are not paying attention. According to Vacaville Police, distracted drivers are responsible for hundreds of deaths and thousands of injuries over the last several years in California. “It is critically important that everyone who drives realize the risks of driving while doing things which distract their attention from the road,” says Vacaville Police Chief Richard Word. “Some of these distractions include using a cell phone, reaching for an object inside a vehicle, or reading. In just seconds, a distraction can take our attention away from another vehicle or a child who steps into the roadway.” The Vacaville Police launched their crackdown on distracted driving in 2011, and have since issued approximately 52,000 citations...

World’s Most Distracted Driver Arrested in California

Police in Torrance, California pulled over a 29-year-old woman who has been dubbed by some as the “world’s most distracted driver.” According to reports, Shawndeeia Bowen was pulled over on the 405 freeway in Los Angeles while texting on her cell phone and also having her one-year-old daughter on her lap. She was driving on a suspended license and was reported to be traveling at speeds in excess of 90 miles-per-hour. Bowen, the mother of six, also had two of her other children in the backseat not wearing seatbelts. “Her excuse was that, while she was driving on the 91 freeway near Compton, the one-year-old started crying and in an effort to comfort the one-year-old, she pulled the one-year-old to the front seat,” the Torrance Police Department told CBS News in Los Angeles. Bowen has been charged with reckless driving and child endangerment. She was held on $130,000 bail and...
